This is a story about a stolen chicken who ended up being the mascot of the University of New South Wales' Netball team!
The story of Steggles the Chook is a good one:
We were playing an inter-university netball tournament out in a town in NSW
called "Wagga Wagga". There are many chicken farms in the area and one in
particular had a terracotta chicken on the top of all the fence posts. Well one
of them was this fine looking rooster with all the plumes and in a drunken
stupour we felt we just had to have him!
So later that night, one of our players plus some accomplices bought a
screwdriver from a local petrol station, unscrewed him and pinched him from the
top of the post! Of course, as head coach and secretary of the club I could not
condone this behaviour but, well...I didn't do anything about it either!!!! <he
he he>.
We named him Steggles (because of the brand of chickens over here that you
already know about) and at our post-tournament party we had a painting festival
and painted him our colours of black and gold. He has come with us to every
tournament , grand-final event, club event etc ever since. We've protected Steggs
from brigands from other universities, we've even had to pay ransom for his
return on one occasion as well (we had to do the "chicken dance" at a local
night club!). He is truly our most revered Club member!
